ALBA WELLNESS GROUP

Not Sure Whether to Stay or Go? You're Not Alone.

Discernment counseling gives you and your partner structured clarity before making a life decision.

What We Do

You're in one of the hardest places a relationship can be. One of you may be ready to leave. The other may be desperate to try. And the silence between those two positions feels unbearable.

You've probably heard people say "just go to couples therapy," but something about that advice doesn't fit, because you're not sure there's a couple left to counsel. That's exactly the space discernment counseling was designed for.

Discernment counseling is not couples therapy. It's a short, structured process, typically one to five sessions, created specifically for mixed-agenda couples: partners who are in different places about the future of their relationship. Rather than diving into deep therapeutic work, discernment counseling helps both of you slow down, understand how you got here, and make a clear-headed decision about what comes next. The three possible paths are recommitting to the relationship through intensive couples therapy, moving toward separation with greater understanding and peace, or maintaining the status quo while you continue to reflect.

At Alba Wellness Group, we offer this process at both our Panorama City and Lancaster locations because we know families in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley deserve access to this kind of specialized support, especially when children are involved, and the stakes feel impossibly high. You don't have to make this decision alone, and you don't have to make it today. But you deserve a process that honors the weight of what you're facing.

Alba Wellness Group was founded by Patricia Alba, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker with over twenty years of experience in trauma and mood disorder treatment. With offices in Panorama City and Lancaster, California, the practice provides culturally responsive therapy for adults, children, teens, and couples, specializing in anxiety, depression, LGBTQ+ affirming care, EMDR, and Ketamine-Assisted Therapy.

How We Do It

Discernment counseling is a specific, evidence-informed protocol developed for couples where at least one partner is "leaning out" of the relationship while the other is "leaning in."

Unlike traditional couples therapy, which assumes both partners are committed to working on the relationship, discernment counseling meets you exactly where you are, even when where you are feels contradictory.

The process is brief by design. Over the course of one to five sessions, your counselor works with each of you both together and individually. In individual conversations, each partner explores their own contributions to the problems in the relationship without the pressure of performing for or defending against the other. The goal is not to fix the marriage in those sessions. The goal is to arrive at a confident, informed decision about the right path forward, one you can stand behind without regret.

Each session typically lasts between one and two hours, and the structure is deliberate. Your counselor will help you examine the history of the relationship, understand the patterns that brought you to this crossroads, and honestly assess whether there is enough foundation to attempt reconciliation through deeper couples work. If both partners decide to commit to that path, Alba Wellness Group offers ongoing couples therapy to support the next phase. If the decision is to separate, we can help you do so with greater understanding, less blame, and more compassion, which matters enormously when co-parenting is part of the picture.

This is not a process where anyone will tell you what to do. It is a structured space for you to think more clearly than you've been able to think at home, where the emotions are loudest, and the conversations keep circling. Families across Panorama City, Lancaster, and the surrounding Los Angeles communities are navigating these decisions every day, and having professional support can make the difference between a reactive choice and a grounded one.

Our Process

Step 1

Schedule a Free 15-Minute Consultation Call

The process begins with a brief, no-pressure phone conversation. During this call, you'll share a little about where you and your partner are right now; you don't need to have the full story prepared. Our team will listen, answer your initial questions, and help you determine whether discernment counseling is the right fit for your situation. This call typically takes 15 minutes and can be scheduled by calling (818) 741-2906 or through our contact page. Only one partner needs to make the initial call.

Step 2

Attend Your First Discernment Session Together

Your first session typically lasts one and a half to two hours and includes time together as a couple as well as individual time with the counselor. During this session, your counselor will learn about your relationship history, understand each partner's current perspective, and establish the framework for the process. There is no pressure to commit to additional sessions; you'll decide together after each session whether to continue. Both partners must be willing to attend; this is a joint process.

Step 3

Explore Your Contributions and Perspectives Individually

In subsequent sessions (up to five total), each partner has individual time with the counselor to reflect honestly on their own role in the relationship's struggles. This is not about assigning fault; it's about building self-awareness that serves you regardless of outcome. The counselor helps you examine patterns, unmet needs, and turning points in the relationship with compassion and without judgment. Sessions are typically scheduled weekly or biweekly, depending on your availability.

Step 4

Arrive at a Clear, Confident Decision

By the end of the process, which may be as few as one or as many as five sessions, you and your partner will have arrived at one of three paths: committing to six months of intensive couples therapy with a renewed agreement to work on the relationship, moving toward separation with greater understanding and less blame, or choosing to maintain the status quo while continuing to reflect. Your counselor will support you in understanding what each path involves and what resources are available to you through Alba Wellness Group and the broader community.

Our Approach

At Alba Wellness Group, our approach to discernment counseling is grounded in a simple belief: you are not broken, and your relationship's struggles do not define you.

Whether you ultimately choose to stay together or to part ways, you deserve a process that treats you both with dignity, respects the gravity of what you're facing, and trusts you to make the right decision for your life.

Our clinical philosophy is rooted in cultural responsiveness, meaning we don't apply a one-size-fits-all framework to your relationship. The counselor working with you will take the time to understand your values, your cultural context, your family dynamics, and the specific pressures you're navigating. For many couples in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley, those pressures include extended family expectations, economic realities, immigration-related stress, and community ties that make a marriage feel much larger than two people. We hold space for all of that.

We also believe that clinician wellness directly impacts client care. Our therapists are supported, supervised, and valued, which means they bring their full presence and energy to your sessions rather than operating from burnout. This is part of Alba's clinician-centered model, and it shows in the quality of the therapeutic relationship from the very first session.

Finally, we see discernment counseling not as an isolated event but as part of a continuum of care. If your process leads to couples therapy, individual therapy, trauma work, or support for your children, those services are available within the same practice, with the same values, and often with clinicians who already understand your story. This integrated approach reduces the friction that so many families experience when navigating a system that wasn't built with them in mind. At Alba, the system was built for you.
