Gottman Method Couples Therapy in Panorama City

Research-backed couples therapy built on 40+ years of relationship science. Real tools. Real change.

What We Do

You already know something is off. Maybe conversations that used to feel easy now spiral into the same exhausting argument. Maybe you're sleeping in the same bed but living in separate emotional worlds.

Maybe one of you found something out, and now trust feels like a word that belongs to a different version of your relationship. You've probably tried talking it through on your own, and it keeps landing in the same painful place. That's not a sign your relationship is broken. It's a sign you need a framework that actually works.

The Gottman Method is not talk therapy where you rehash the same stories. It is a structured, research-validated approach developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman after studying over 3,000 couples across four decades. Every intervention is grounded in data about what makes relationships succeed or fail, from how you start a disagreement to how you repair after one. At Alba Wellness Group, our Gottman-trained therapists use this science to give you concrete tools you can use between sessions, not just insights you forget by Tuesday.

And because we're rooted right here in the San Fernando Valley, we understand the real pressures couples in this community face: long commutes that steal your evenings, the cost of living that turns money into a recurring argument, the cultural expectations that make asking for help feel like admitting failure. Our Panorama City office on Roscoe Blvd. is designed to feel like a place you'd actually want to come back to, because lasting change requires more than one session. It requires a space where both of you feel seen.

Alba Wellness Group was founded by Patricia Alba, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker with over twenty years of experience in trauma and mood disorder treatment. With offices in Panorama City and Lancaster, California, the practice provides culturally responsive therapy for adults, children, teens, and couples, specializing in anxiety, depression, LGBTQ+ affirming care, EMDR, and Ketamine-Assisted Therapy.

How We Do It

Gottman Method Couples Therapy is an evidence-based approach to relationship repair and strengthening that uses assessment tools, targeted interventions, and structured sessions to address the specific patterns damaging your connection.

Unlike general couples counseling, the Gottman Method begins with a thorough evaluation of your relationship's strengths and stress points, including what the Gottmans call the "Four Horsemen" of communication breakdown: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling. Your therapist identifies exactly where your relationship gets stuck and builds a treatment plan around those patterns.

A typical course of therapy at Alba Wellness Group begins with a joint session where both partners share what brought you in, followed by individual sessions with each partner so your therapist can understand your personal history and experience of the relationship without the pressure of your partner in the room. From there, your therapist creates a tailored roadmap. Sessions focus on practical, skill-based work, learning to make repair attempts during conflict, building rituals of connection that fit your actual life, deepening your friendship, and creating shared meaning as a couple. This is not abstract theory. You will leave sessions with specific things to practice at home.

Our therapists also integrate Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) when it serves your goals, particularly for couples processing betrayal, infidelity recovery, or deep attachment wounds where emotional safety must be rebuilt before skill-building can take hold. This combination allows us to meet you where you are rather than forcing your relationship into a single therapeutic box.

Sessions are held at our Panorama City office at 14500 Roscoe Blvd., Suite 400. We offer weekday evening and Saturday appointments to accommodate the working schedules that most San Fernando Valley couples manage. Whether you're three months into trouble or thirty years in, the Gottman Method gives your relationship a framework grounded in what the research actually says works.

Our Process

Step 1

Book Your Free 15-Minute Match Call

Your first step is a brief, no-pressure phone conversation with our intake team. During this call, you'll share a high-level overview of what's happening in your relationship and what you're hoping to change. We'll explain how the Gottman Method works, answer your initial questions about scheduling, fees, and what to expect, and match you with a therapist whose training, availability, and clinical style fit your needs. This call typically takes 10–15 minutes and can be scheduled by one partner; the other doesn't need to be present. You'll leave the call with a clear next step and zero obligation to proceed if it doesn't feel right.

Step 2

Complete the Gottman Assessment

Before your first full session, both partners complete the Gottman Relationship Checkup, an online assessment that evaluates the strengths and challenge areas in your relationship across multiple dimensions, including communication, conflict patterns, trust, intimacy, and shared meaning. This isn't busywork. The results give your therapist a detailed, data-driven picture of your relationship before you even sit down together. Expect the assessment to take approximately 30–45 minutes per partner. Your individual responses are confidential and inform the treatment plan your therapist develops.

Step 3

Joint Session and Individual Sessions

Your therapy begins with one joint session where both partners meet with your therapist together, followed by one individual session for each partner. The joint session focuses on your shared experience of the relationship and your goals for therapy. The individual sessions give each partner private space to share personal history, concerns, and perspectives that may be difficult to voice in front of your partner. This three-session assessment phase typically occurs over two to three weeks and forms the foundation for everything that follows.

Step 4

Feedback Session and Treatment Plan

Your therapist synthesizes the Gottman assessment data and the insights from your initial sessions into a comprehensive feedback session. In this session, your therapist will present a clear picture of your relationship's dynamics, what's working, what's not, and why specific patterns keep recurring. Together, you'll agree on a focused treatment plan with concrete goals, targeted interventions, and a realistic timeline. Both partners leave this session understanding exactly what the work ahead looks like.

Step 5

Ongoing Therapy and Skill Building

With your treatment plan in place, weekly sessions focus on building the specific skills your relationship needs, whether that's conflict de-escalation, emotional attunement, repair after arguments, rebuilding trust, or deepening friendship and intimacy. Your therapist assigns between-session exercises so the work extends into your daily life. Sessions are typically weekly during the active phase and may shift to biweekly as you gain momentum. Progress is assessed regularly, and the plan adjusts as your relationship evolves.

Our Approach

At Alba Wellness Group, our approach to couples therapy is rooted in the belief that relationships are not problems to be solved; they are living systems that can be understood, strengthened, and healed when you have the right tools and the right support.

We use the Gottman Method as our clinical backbone because it is the most extensively researched couples therapy framework in existence, built on observable data about how real relationships function under stress, joy, conflict, and connection. This is not therapy based on one person's philosophy. It is therapy based on what four decades of longitudinal research have proven to work.

Our therapists bring a particular depth to this work because they also draw on Emotionally Focused Therapy when the clinical situation calls for it. The Gottman Method excels at identifying destructive patterns and replacing them with functional skills. EFT excels at reaching the deeper emotional currents, the attachment fears, the longing for safety, the vulnerability beneath the anger, that drive those patterns in the first place. By integrating these approaches, we can work with couples at multiple levels simultaneously: the behavioral level of how you argue, and the emotional level of why that argument feels so devastating. This integration is not a generic claim. It reflects the specific clinical training our team holds and the flexibility our clinician-centered model supports.

We also recognize that couples therapy does not happen in a vacuum. The couples we serve in Panorama City and across the San Fernando Valley bring the full complexity of their lives into the room: cultural expectations about marriage and gender roles, financial stress specific to living in Los Angeles, the impact of immigration experiences on family dynamics, the unique pressures faced by LGBTQ+ couples, and the emotional toll of raising children in a demanding environment. Our practice was built to honor that complexity. Cultural responsiveness is not an add-on at Alba. It is embedded in how we train, how we assess, and how we design treatment plans. We want you to feel that your therapist understands not just your relationship, but the world your relationship exists in.

The result is an approach that is structured enough to produce measurable change and human enough to meet you where you actually are. We are not here to judge your relationship or tell you what to do. We are here to give you the science, the skills, and the safe space to decide, together, what you want your relationship to become.
