ALBA WELLNESS GROUP
Premarital Counseling in Los Angeles, CA
Build the marriage you actually want, before the wedding stress makes you forget why.
What We Do
You said "yes" to each other. Now you're deep in venue contracts, guest lists, and seating charts, and somewhere between the cake tasting and the DJ playlist, the actual relationship can start to feel like an afterthought.
You might notice small disagreements getting sharper, unspoken expectations bubbling up, or quiet worry about whether you're truly prepared for a lifelong partnership. These feelings are not a red flag. They are an invitation, a sign that you care enough to do this well.
Alba Wellness Group's premarital counseling program is built on the Gottman Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, one of the most rigorously researched frameworks in relationship science. Rather than waiting for conflict to become a crisis, our workshops give you and your partner a shared language for navigating money, intimacy, in-laws, life goals, and the everyday friction that every couple faces. You will walk away with practical tools, not vague advice, that you can use the week of your wedding and the decade after it.
Because we are rooted in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley communities, we understand the unique pressures couples here face: long commutes that eat into quality time, multigenerational households with competing expectations, and the high cost of building a life in Los Angeles. Our workshops are designed to honor your cultural context, your values, and the real-world circumstances of your relationship, so the skills you learn actually stick where you live.
Alba Wellness Group was founded by Patricia Alba, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker with over twenty years of experience in trauma and mood disorder treatment. With offices in Panorama City and Lancaster, California, the practice provides culturally responsive therapy for adults, children, teens, and couples, specializing in anxiety, depression, LGBTQ+ affirming care, EMDR, and Ketamine-Assisted Therapy.
How We Do It
Our premarital counseling program centers on the Gottman Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work workshop, a structured, evidence-based experience designed for engaged and pre-married couples who want to invest in their relationship before walking down the aisle.
The workshop is offered in a small-group format at both our Panorama City and Lancaster locations, creating an intimate learning environment where couples can practice skills in real time alongside other pairs at the same life stage.
During the workshop, you and your partner will work through guided exercises that help you deepen your understanding of each other's inner worlds, strengthen friendship and fondness, learn to turn toward each other during everyday moments, and develop shared meaning and purpose for your life together. The curriculum also addresses constructive conflict management, teaching you how to identify gridlocked issues, soften the way you raise concerns, and repair conversations when they go sideways. These are not abstract lectures; they are hands-on activities you complete together, with a trained facilitator guiding you every step of the way.
The workshop format is intentionally lower-pressure than traditional couples therapy. You do not need a diagnosis, a crisis, or even a specific problem to attend. Many of our couples are referred by their officiant, pastor, or church community as part of marriage preparation, and others simply want a proactive foundation. Either way, the experience is affirming, practical, and often genuinely fun. Couples frequently tell us it was one of the most meaningful things they did during the engagement period.
For couples who discover deeper issues during the workshop, or who simply want continued support, Alba Wellness Group offers ongoing couples therapy with clinicians trained in the Gottman Method. The workshop becomes a natural first step into a longer relationship with our practice, on your terms and at your pace.

Benefits of Therapy at Alba Wellness Group
KEY BENEFITS
-
The Gottman Method is not pop psychology, it is the product of over four decades of scientific research conducted by Drs. John and Julie Gottman at the University of Washington, involving thousands of couples studied over time. Their research identified the specific behaviors that distinguish couples who stay happily together from those who do not. When you attend a Gottman Seven Principles workshop at Alba Wellness Group, you are learning the exact skills that research has shown predict long-term relationship satisfaction and stability.
This matters because the engagement period is full of well-meaning but vague advice from friends and family, "just communicate" or "never go to bed angry." Those platitudes rarely hold up under the real pressures of married life. What the Gottman framework gives you instead is a concrete set of tools: how to build Love Maps (deep knowledge of each other's world), how to nurture fondness and admiration even when you are frustrated, how to manage conflict without escalation, and how to create shared rituals and meaning that sustain your connection over years and decades.
For couples in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley, where demanding work schedules and long commutes can shrink quality time to almost nothing, having a structured skill set is especially valuable. You will leave the workshop knowing exactly how to make the most of the time you do have together, turning even a fifteen-minute evening check-in into a moment that strengthens your bond. These are not theoretical concepts; they are daily practices you can start using immediately.

Money. Sex. In-laws. Children. Career ambitions. Division of household labor. These are the conversations that most engaged couples either avoid entirely or handle with surface-level agreements that crumble under real-world pressure. Premarital counseling creates a safe, structured space to have these conversations now, when the stakes are lower, defenses are down, and you genuinely want to understand each other, rather than discovering fundamental misalignments three years into a mortgage.
The Gottman workshop walks you through exercises specifically designed to surface each partner's dreams, fears, and non-negotiable values around these high-stakes topics. You will learn the difference between solvable problems (which respond to compromise and practical strategy) and perpetual problems (which require ongoing dialogue, acceptance, and understanding). Research shows that roughly 69 percent of relationship conflicts are perpetual, meaning they never fully resolve. The couples who thrive are not the ones who eliminate disagreements; they are the ones who learn to dialogue about them with humor, affection, and mutual respect.
In a city as diverse as Los Angeles, couples often come from different cultural, religious, or socioeconomic backgrounds, and those differences can create invisible fault lines around expectations for family involvement, gender roles, financial management, and parenting philosophy. Our facilitators are trained in culturally responsive practice and create space for couples to explore these differences without judgment, helping you find common ground that honors both partners' identities and histories.

One of the biggest barriers to premarital support is the perception that therapy is only for couples in trouble. The workshop format deliberately lowers that barrier. You are not sitting in a therapist's office dissecting your relationship's weaknesses, you are attending a structured educational experience alongside other engaged couples who are equally motivated to build a strong foundation. The atmosphere is warm, collaborative, and often surprisingly enjoyable.
This matters particularly for partners who may be hesitant about traditional therapy. Maybe one of you grew up in a family where "airing dirty laundry" was frowned upon, or maybe the idea of sitting on a couch talking about feelings feels foreign or uncomfortable. The workshop format provides built-in structure, guided exercises, shared activities, and clear takeaways, so you always know what to expect and never feel put on the spot. You are learning together, not being evaluated.
The small-group setting also offers a unique benefit: normalization. When you see other engaged couples wrestling with the same questions and uncertainties, it becomes clear that your concerns are not signs of a flawed relationship but rather the universal growing pains of building a life with another person. That realization alone can be profoundly relieving. And because Alba Wellness Group keeps groups intimate, you still receive personalized attention and guidance from your facilitator without feeling lost in a crowd. Our Panorama City and Lancaster locations offer weekend and evening sessions designed to fit the schedules of busy working couples across Los Angeles.
-
The Gottman research is unequivocal: the quality of a couple's friendship is the single most powerful predictor of relationship satisfaction. Friendship, in this context, means genuinely knowing your partner, their worries, their joys, their evolving dreams, and consistently turning toward them in small, everyday moments. It sounds simple, but life has a way of eroding these micro-connections. Wedding planning alone can consume so much bandwidth that you stop asking each other open-ended questions or noticing the small bids for attention your partner makes throughout the day.
The workshop dedicates focused time to rebuilding and deepening this friendship layer. Through Love Maps exercises, you will discover (or rediscover) details about your partner's inner world that you may have never thought to ask about, their current stressors, their secret ambitions, the childhood memories that shaped them. Through Fondness and Admiration exercises, you will practice articulating specific things you genuinely respect and appreciate about each other, creating a reservoir of positive sentiment that buffers against future conflict.
For couples in the Los Angeles area, where the pace of life can be relentless, these friendship-building practices become essential maintenance. Think of it as creating a shared ritual you carry into your marriage, a weekly Love Maps conversation over coffee, a daily moment of expressed appreciation, a habit of asking "How can I support you today?" These small investments compound over time and become the connective tissue that holds your marriage together through job changes, moves, new babies, and all the unpredictable chapters ahead.

Every couple argues. The difference between couples who stay happily together and those who don't is not the presence of conflict, it is how they handle it. Gottman's research identified four specific communication behaviors that predict relationship failure with over 90 percent accuracy: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling (known as the "Four Horsemen"). Most couples are completely unaware of these patterns even as they use them daily.
In the premarital workshop, you will learn to recognize these destructive patterns in your own communication and replace them with healthier alternatives: gentle startup instead of criticism, building a culture of appreciation instead of contempt, taking responsibility instead of becoming defensive, and physiological self-soothing instead of stonewalling. These are not personality overhauls, they are specific, learnable skills that anyone can practice with guidance and intention.
Addressing these patterns before marriage is a significant strategic advantage. Conflict habits are much easier to reshape when they have not yet had years to calcify. Newly engaged couples often have high motivation and goodwill, which makes them particularly receptive to learning new approaches. By investing a single weekend in this workshop, you give your future marriage a measurably better chance of navigating disagreements without lasting damage. And if you discover during the workshop that certain conflict areas need deeper exploration, Alba Wellness Group's couples therapists are available to continue the work with you in individual sessions, a seamless transition from workshop to ongoing support.

Marriage does not stop evolving after the wedding, and neither should your investment in it. One of the unique advantages of beginning your journey at Alba Wellness Group is that the premarital workshop is not an isolated event, it is a doorway into a full continuum of relationship support. If, six months or six years into your marriage, you encounter a season that feels harder than expected, you already have a relationship with a practice that knows you.
Our couples therapists are trained in the Gottman Method and share the workshop's philosophical foundation, which means there is no need to start from scratch explaining your history, your values, or the tools you have already learned. You simply pick up where you left off, with a clinician who understands your framework and can help you apply it to whatever new challenge has emerged, a major life transition, a parenting disagreement, a period of emotional distance, or something you cannot quite name but know is not right.
This continuity of care is especially valuable for couples in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley who may not have had positive past experiences with mental health services or who come from communities where seeking help carries stigma. Knowing that you already have a trusted, culturally responsive practice in your corner can lower the barrier to reaching out when it matters most. Alba Wellness Group also offers individual therapy, so if one partner needs personal support for anxiety, depression, trauma, or identity exploration, that resource is already available within the same practice.
Our Services
Gottman Seven Principles Workshop for Couples
Our flagship premarital offering. This structured, small-group workshop walks engaged and pre-married couples through the seven research-based principles that predict marriage success. Held at our Panorama City and Lancaster locations, the workshop includes guided exercises, couple activities, and facilitator support. Weekend and evening sessions available. Ideal for couples referred by their officiant or seeking proactive relationship preparation.
Couples Therapy (Gottman Method)
For couples who want deeper, individualized work, either as a complement to the workshop or as a standalone service. Our clinicians use the Gottman Method to help partners improve communication, rebuild trust, and navigate conflict. Sessions are available in person at both locations or virtually throughout California. A natural next step for workshop graduates who want continued support.
LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy
We welcome all couples, including same-sex, nonbinary, and queer partnerships. Our clinicians are trained in affirming practices and understand the unique pressures LGBTQ+ couples may face around family acceptance, legal protections, and community belonging, ensuring that every couple feels seen and valued in our space.
Individual Therapy
Sometimes one partner needs personal space to work through anxiety, depression, trauma, or identity questions that affect the relationship. Our therapists offer individual sessions tailored to your values, lived experience, and goals, ensuring that personal growth and relationship growth can happen in parallel within the same trusted practice.
Anger Management Program
For partners who recognize that anger is playing a disruptive role in their relationship, our anger management program combines individual and group approaches. Evidence-based tools help you understand what is underneath the anger and develop healthier ways to express and channel it, strengthening your relationship in the process.
Our Process
Step 1
Book a Free 15-Minute Consultation Call
Before anything else, we want to make sure this workshop is the right fit for you and your partner. Call us at (818) 741-2906 or use our online scheduler to book a brief, no-obligation conversation. During this call, we will answer your questions, walk you through what to expect, and help you choose between our Panorama City or Lancaster location and available session dates. If your officiant or church referred you, let us know; we are happy to coordinate any documentation they require. This call typically takes place within a few days of your inquiry.
Step 2
Reserve Your Workshop Seat
Once you are ready, we will confirm your registration and send you a welcome packet with everything you need to prepare. This includes a brief couple questionnaire, logistical details (location, parking, what to bring), and a preview of the workshop structure so there are no surprises. Registration is limited to keep groups small and ensure personalized attention. Most couples register four to eight weeks before their preferred workshop date, but we recommend booking early since seats fill quickly.
Step 3
Attend the Gottman Seven Principles Workshop
This is where the real work, and the real connection, happens. Over the course of the workshop sessions, you and your partner will move through guided exercises covering friendship, conflict management, shared meaning, and more. The atmosphere is supportive and interactive; you will work primarily as a couple with facilitator guidance, not in front of the group. Expect to leave with a personalized set of tools and a deeper understanding of your partner than you had walking in.
Step 4
Take Your Skills Into Your Marriage, and Know We Are Here
After the workshop, the skills are yours to keep. Many couples tell us the exercises become part of their weekly routine. You will also receive follow-up resources and recommendations for continued growth. If at any point you want deeper support, whether it is couples therapy, individual sessions, or simply a check-in, Alba Wellness Group is already in your corner. There is no pressure, no expiration, and no need to start over.
Our Approach
At Alba Wellness Group, we believe that preparing for marriage is one of the most generous things you can do for your relationship, and it should feel that way.
Our approach to premarital counseling is grounded in the conviction that you and your partner are not broken, not in crisis, and not here to be fixed. You are here because you care about doing this well, and our role is to give you the best possible tools to succeed.
Our methodology is rooted in the Gottman Method, which stands apart from other relationship frameworks because it is built entirely on empirical observation, not theory, not opinion, but decades of watching real couples interact and identifying what actually works. The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work workshop translates that research into practical, hands-on exercises that you complete together as a couple. Every activity is designed to build a specific relationship skill: deepening knowledge of each other's inner world, strengthening admiration, learning to turn toward each other in small moments, managing conflict constructively, and creating shared purpose and meaning for your life together.
What makes our practice different is how we hold this work. Our facilitators are culturally responsive clinicians who understand that relationships do not exist in a vacuum. Your cultural background, family dynamics, faith tradition, gender identity, and lived experience all shape how you love, argue, and connect, and we honor that complexity rather than flattening it into a one-size-fits-all program. Whether you are a same-sex couple navigating family acceptance, a bilingual household blending traditions, or partners from different faith backgrounds finding common ground, our space is designed to hold the full richness of who you are.
We also recognize that the workshop may be your first interaction with mental health support, and we take that seriously. From the moment you call to the moment you walk out, every touchpoint is designed to feel welcoming, clear, and free of jargon. If the workshop opens a door to deeper work, we are here for that too. If it gives you everything you need, that is a success. Either way, you leave with skills you will use for the rest of your marriage, and a community that is always in your corner.

Not at all. The workshop is designed for couples who want to build a strong foundation, not couples in crisis. Most participants are engaged or pre-married and simply want practical tools for a healthy marriage. Think of it as proactive investment, similar to how you would plan finances or discuss future goals before the wedding. No diagnosis or specific issue is needed to register.

The workshop is a structured, time-limited educational experience focused on building core relationship skills. Ongoing couples therapy is individualized clinical work where you and your partner explore specific issues in depth with a dedicated therapist. Many couples start with the workshop and transition to therapy if they want deeper support, but neither is required to access the other.
