ALBA WELLNESS GROUP
Your Teen Isn't Refusing School. They're Drowning.
Teen anxiety therapy that gets your child back to class and back to feeling like themselves.
What We Do
Every morning is the same battle. Your teen can't get out of bed. They're crying, shutting down, or exploding before the first bell rings.
You've tried bargaining, consequences, and reassurance; nothing works. The school keeps calling. You're terrified they're falling behind, losing friends, and slipping away from the life they used to have. And somewhere underneath all that fear, a quiet voice asks the question no parent wants to face: What if I'm making this worse?
You're not. And your teen isn't being lazy, defiant, or dramatic. What you're witnessing is anxiety so overwhelming that their nervous system has decided school feels genuinely unsafe. School refusal is one of the most misunderstood expressions of adolescent anxiety, and it responds powerfully to the right kind of therapeutic support. At Alba Wellness Group, we specialize in helping teens aged 12–17 move through the paralysis of anxiety, rebuild their confidence, and return to school and social life on a timeline that actually sticks.
Our offices in Panorama City and Lancaster were built to serve the families of the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley, communities where culturally responsive, affirming teen therapy can be hard to find. We don't treat your teen as a problem to be fixed. We treat them as a whole person whose anxiety is telling us something important. And we treat you, the parent, as an essential part of the healing process, because you are.
Alba Wellness Group was founded by Patricia Alba, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker with over twenty years of experience in trauma and mood disorder treatment. With offices in Panorama City and Lancaster, California, the practice provides culturally responsive therapy for adults, children, teens, and couples, specializing in anxiety, depression, LGBTQ+ affirming care, EMDR, and Ketamine-Assisted Therapy.
How We Do It
Teen anxiety and school refusal therapy at Alba Wellness Group is a structured, compassionate process designed specifically for adolescents whose anxiety has escalated to the point of avoiding school, social settings, or daily activities.
This is not general talk therapy repurposed for younger clients. Our clinicians are trained in adolescent development, anxiety disorders, trauma-informed care, and evidence-based modalities including EMDR, DBT, and somatic approaches, meaning your teen gets treatment matched to how their brain and body actually process fear.
Therapy begins with a thorough intake that includes both the teen and the parent or caregiver. We want to understand the full picture: when the school avoidance started, what triggers escalate it, how it shows up in the body, and what has already been tried. From there, your teen's therapist builds a personalized treatment plan that addresses the root causes of anxiety, not just the surface behavior of refusing to attend class. Sessions are held weekly and may include a combination of individual teen therapy, parent guidance sessions, and, when appropriate, coordination with school counselors or administrators to create a supported re-entry plan.
Most families begin to see a shift in their teen's willingness to engage within the first four to six weeks, though meaningful, lasting change typically unfolds over three to six months of consistent work. We set realistic expectations early because we know you're desperate for a timeline, and we want to give you one that's honest, not just hopeful.
What makes our approach different is that we don't isolate the teen from the family system. We understand that a teen's anxiety lives in the context of their relationships, their cultural identity, their school environment, and the community around them. Our therapists honor that complexity rather than reducing your teen's experience to a diagnosis code.

Benefits of Therapy at Alba Wellness Group
KEY BENEFITS
-
Most parents who come to us have already tried everything behavioral: reward charts, consequences, negotiated compromises about attending "just one class." These strategies fail because they target the visible symptom, the refusal, while the underlying anxiety continues to intensify unchecked. At Alba Wellness Group, our clinicians are trained to identify and treat the specific anxiety pattern driving your teen's avoidance, whether that's social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, separation anxiety, or trauma-related fear responses.
Using evidence-based approaches like EMDR, DBT skills training, and somatic experiencing, we help your teen understand what's happening in their nervous system and give them concrete tools to move through anxiety rather than around it. This is not about forcing your teen to "just push through." It's about reducing the intensity of the fear response so that school and life feel manageable again.
For families in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley, where teens often face additional stressors related to economic pressure, cultural expectations, and under-resourced school systems, this kind of targeted treatment can be transformative. We've seen teens go from months of absence to attending school consistently, not because someone made them, but because the anxiety no longer had the power to stop them.

One of the most disempowering aspects of teen anxiety is how isolated it makes parents feel. You're watching your child suffer, and you don't know what to say, what to do, or whether your involvement is helping or hurting. At Alba Wellness Group, we reject the outdated model that keeps parents entirely outside the therapy room. You are your teen's most important relationship, and your involvement is essential to lasting change.
Our approach includes dedicated parent guidance sessions where your teen's therapist helps you understand the anxiety cycle, learn what responses reduce escalation versus amplify it, and develop communication strategies that keep the connection between you and your teen intact even during the hardest moments. We also offer parent therapy as a standalone service for caregivers who need their own space to process the grief, frustration, and fear that comes with parenting an anxious teen.
This is especially important for families navigating cultural dynamics where mental health may carry stigma, where family roles are deeply defined, or where parents are balancing multiple jobs and caregiving responsibilities. We meet you where you are, not where a textbook says you should be. Many parents tell us that the parent sessions alone transformed their home environment, even before their teen's individual therapy produced visible change.

Returning to school after weeks or months of avoidance is one of the most anxiety-provoking things a teenager can face. Walking back into a building where peers noticed their absence, where teachers may have expressed frustration, and where the academic workload has piled up can feel impossible. That's why Alba Wellness Group offers school coordination support as part of our teen anxiety treatment.
With your consent, your teen's therapist can communicate directly with school counselors, administrators, or 504/IEP teams to advocate for accommodations that support a gradual, sustainable return. This might include a modified schedule, a designated safe space on campus, adjusted academic expectations during the transition period, or regular check-ins with a school counselor. We help translate clinical insights into language that school personnel understand and can act on.
For families in the Panorama City and Lancaster areas, where school districts are large and under-resourced, having a clinical advocate who knows how to navigate the system can make the difference between a successful re-entry and another failed attempt. We've worked with LAUSD and Antelope Valley schools extensively, and we understand the bureaucratic realities that families face. Our goal is to remove as many barriers as possible so your teen can focus on what matters: showing up and rebuilding their confidence one day at a time.
-
Your teen's anxiety doesn't exist in a vacuum. It lives inside their identity, their race, their culture, their gender, their sexuality, their family's history, and the world that responds to all of those things every single day. At Alba Wellness Group, we don't offer a one-size-fits-all therapeutic experience and then call it inclusive. Our clinicians are trained in culturally responsive care, and our practice was founded specifically to serve communities that have been historically underserved by traditional mental health systems.
We welcome teens of color, LGBTQ+ youth, first-generation Americans, bilingual families, and anyone who has ever felt unseen in a clinical setting. For teens whose anxiety is compounded by identity-based stress, the pressure of code-switching, the weight of family expectations shaped by immigration or cultural tradition, and the fear of being outed or misunderstood, having a therapist who gets it without needing a lengthy explanation is not a luxury. It's a clinical necessity.
Families throughout the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley represent an extraordinary diversity of backgrounds, languages, and lived experiences. Our practice reflects that diversity intentionally, both in our team and in our therapeutic approach. When your teen walks into our office, they should feel like they belong, because at Alba, belonging isn't a marketing promise. It's the foundation of everything we do.

When your teen hasn't attended school in weeks, every day feels like an emergency. You want to know: How long will this take? We believe you deserve an honest answer, even when the honest answer is nuanced. Based on our clinical experience with adolescent anxiety and school refusal, here's what most families can expect.
In the first two to four weeks, the focus is on building trust between your teen and their therapist, completing a thorough assessment, and stabilizing the home environment through parent guidance. During weeks four through eight, your teen begins actively working with anxiety management tools, and we typically begin conversations about a gradual school re-engagement plan. Between months two and six, most teens are making measurable progress, attending school with increasing consistency, experiencing fewer panic episodes, and rebuilding social connections.
Some teens move through this process faster; others need more time, especially if trauma, depression, or identity-related stress is part of the picture. We conduct regular progress check-ins with both the teen and the parent to ensure the treatment plan is working and to adjust when it isn't. Our commitment is to keep you informed and involved so you never feel like you're guessing about whether therapy is actually helping. Transparency isn't optional; it's how we build the trust that makes healing possible.

Access matters. If getting to therapy is a logistical nightmare, it becomes just another barrier for families already stretched thin. Alba Wellness Group maintains two physical offices, one in Panorama City serving the San Fernando Valley, and one in Lancaster serving the Antelope Valley, so that families in both communities have a local option for in-person care.
For families who prefer the flexibility of remote sessions, or whose teen is more comfortable engaging from the safety of their own space (which is often the case with school refusal), we offer telehealth therapy throughout the state of California. Telehealth can be especially effective during the early stages of treatment when your teen's anxiety may be too intense for them to leave the house comfortably. Starting with virtual sessions allows us to begin building the therapeutic relationship immediately rather than waiting until your teen feels "ready enough" for in-person care.
Whether you're in Sylmar, Palmdale, North Hollywood, or anywhere else in greater Los Angeles County, we can work with your family. Evening and weekend availability is offered to accommodate school schedules and parents' work commitments. We believe that the families who need help the most are often the ones with the least flexibility, and we've structured our practice to meet that reality head-on.
Our Services
Anxiety Treatment
Evidence-based treatment for generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, and phobia-related avoidance. Our clinicians use DBT, EMDR, somatic techniques, and other proven modalities to help teens and adults interrupt the anxiety cycle at its source, not just manage the symptoms on the surface.
Parent Therapy
Parenting an anxious teen can leave you feeling helpless, frustrated, and isolated. Parent therapy gives you a space to process your own emotional experience while learning concrete strategies to support your teen without losing yourself in the process. Available as a standalone service or alongside your teen's treatment.
EMDR & Trauma Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective, research-backed therapy for processing traumatic experiences that continue to affect daily life. For teens whose school refusal is rooted in past trauma, bullying, family disruption, or adverse experiences, EMDR can accelerate healing in ways traditional talk therapy alone may not.
Teen Therapy
A dedicated therapeutic space for adolescents aged 12–17 navigating anxiety, identity, family conflict, and the pressures of growing up. Sessions are tailored to your teen's developmental stage and personal experience, using approaches that feel relevant and engaging rather than clinical or forced. We welcome all teens, especially those who haven't felt reflected in traditional therapy.
Teen Identity Therapy
Adolescence is a time of profound self-discovery, and for many teens, questions about identity, cultural, gender, sexual, or personal, can generate significant anxiety. Our affirming approach helps teens explore who they are becoming in a space that is free from judgment, pressure, or the expectation to have it all figured out.
Our Process
Step 1
Free 15-Minute Parent Consultation, You Talk, We Listen
Before anything else, we want to hear from you. This brief phone consultation is designed specifically for parents; no teen required. You'll speak with a member of our clinical team who will listen to what's been happening, answer your initial questions, and help you determine whether Alba Wellness Group is the right fit for your family. There's no pressure, no obligation, and no judgment about how long you waited to make this call. Most parents feel relief after this conversation because someone finally understands what they've been going through. Call (818) 741-2906 or submit a request through contact.
Expected timeframe: 15 minutes. Parent only.
Step 2
Comprehensive Intake Assessment: Getting the Full Picture
Your teen's first session is a thorough intake that includes both the adolescent and the parent or caregiver. We explore the history of the anxiety, when school refusal began, what triggers escalate avoidance, how the family system has been affected, and what has already been tried. This isn't a checkbox exercise; it's a real conversation designed to understand your teen as a whole person. Based on this assessment, we develop a personalized treatment plan with clear goals and a realistic timeline.
Expected timeframe: 1–2 sessions (50–60 minutes each). Teen and parent participate.
Step 3
Weekly Teen Therapy Sessions, Building Real Skills
Your teen begins weekly individual therapy using evidence-based approaches tailored to their specific anxiety pattern. Sessions focus on understanding the nervous system, developing concrete coping strategies, processing underlying fears or trauma, and gradually building the confidence needed to re-engage with school and social life. Your therapist checks in with you regularly and may schedule periodic parent guidance sessions to keep the family aligned.
Expected timeframe: Ongoing, typically weekly for 3–6 months. The teen attends individually; parent sessions are scheduled as needed.
Step 4
School Coordination and Gradual Re-Entry, Bridging the Gap
When your teen is ready, we work with you and their school to develop a supported re-entry plan. This may include communicating with school counselors, recommending accommodations, or helping navigate 504/IEP processes. The goal is a gradual, sustainable return, not a forced, all-or-nothing leap. We stay involved throughout the transition to troubleshoot setbacks and celebrate progress.
Expected timeframe: Begins around weeks 4–8, continues as needed. Collaborative between therapist, parent, and school.
Step 5
Progress Review and Long-Term Planning, Making It Last
We conduct formal progress reviews at regular intervals to ensure treatment goals are being met and to adjust the plan as needed. As your teen stabilizes, we discuss strategies for maintaining gains, reducing session frequency, and building long-term resilience. Our goal is not to keep your teen in therapy forever; it's to give them the tools they need to thrive independently.
Expected timeframe: Ongoing check-ins; transition planning typically begins around months 4–6.
Our Approach
At Alba Wellness Group, we believe that teen anxiety, especially when it reaches the level of school refusal, is not a character flaw, a phase, or a discipline problem.
It is a signal from the nervous system that something feels deeply unsafe, and it deserves to be treated with the same clinical seriousness and compassion as any other health condition. Our therapeutic approach is built on this foundational respect for what your teen is experiencing, even when their behavior is confusing, frustrating, or frightening to witness.
Our clinicians draw from a range of evidence-based modalities, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for emotional regulation, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for trauma processing, Internal Family Systems (IFS) for understanding the different parts of your teen's inner world, and somatic approaches that address the physical experience of anxiety, the racing heart, the stomach pain, the legs that won't move toward the door. We don't believe in one-size-fits-all treatment, and we don't rigidly follow a single model. We follow your teen.
What makes our work distinct is the integration of cultural responsiveness into every aspect of care. For families in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley, therapy must account for the real-world context in which anxiety develops and persists. That includes economic stress, immigration-related fear, experiences of racism or discrimination, cultural attitudes toward mental health, and the particular pressures facing teens of color and LGBTQ+ youth. Our clinicians don't treat these as footnotes; they treat them as central to understanding your teen's experience.
We are also deeply committed to the clinician-centered care model that founder Patricia Alba built this practice on. When therapists are supported, supervised, and valued, they show up more fully for their clients. That philosophy directly benefits your teen: they receive care from clinicians who are not burned out, not rushing, and not operating from a place of scarcity. They receive care from people who chose this work because they believe in it, and who are given the resources to do it well.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
School refusal driven by anxiety almost always comes with physical symptoms, stomach aches, headaches, nausea, panic attacks, or difficulty sleeping. Your teen may express intense dread about school, cry or shut down before class, or seem genuinely unable (not unwilling) to leave the house. If consequences and incentives haven't worked, anxiety is very likely the root cause. A clinical assessment can clarify what's happening and what kind of support will help. They barely talk to me. No. Our therapists are skilled at building trust with teens who are guarded, withdrawn, or resistant to therapy. The first several sessions focus on creating safety and rapport, not forcing disclosure. Many teens open up once they feel genuinely respected and unjudged. We move at your teen's pace, not ours.
-
Parents are an essential part of treatment. You'll participate in the initial intake, receive regular updates from your teen's therapist, and may attend dedicated parent guidance sessions. We also offer parent therapy as a standalone service for caregivers who need their own support. Your teen's confidentiality is respected, but you'll never be left in the dark about the direction of treatment.
-
Yes. With your consent, your teen's therapist can communicate with school counselors, teachers, or 504/IEP teams to advocate for accommodations that support a gradual, sustainable return. We have experience working with LAUSD and Antelope Valley school districts and understand the process for requesting modifications.

Every teen is different, but most families see initial shifts within four to six weeks and meaningful, sustained progress over three to six months. We set clear goals during the intake process and conduct regular progress reviews, so you always know where things stand. Our priority is lasting change, not a quick fix that falls apart under pressure.
